Description

🏝️ Green Grotto Cave: The Cave with Seven Names and a Secret Underground Lake ✨ Vibe Check: Underground mystery, historical intrigue, speleologist's dream

What cave has had seven different names and served as everything from Taino hideout to WWII rum storage? Green Grotto Cave is Jamaica's ultimate underground time capsule - a 1,525-meter limestone labyrinth with a hidden subterranean lake that has sheltered Taino Indians, Spanish refugees, Cuban arms smugglers, and World War II rum barrels. This mystical cave system with stalactites, stalagmites, and resident bats offers speleologist adventures and historical discoveries all in one underground wonderland.

From ancient pottery fragments to secret lake exploration, this is where Jamaica's underground secrets come alive.

Resident Adults required to present one of the following forms of valid identification at the Ticket Office: EITHER Jamaican Driver’s Licence OR National Registration ID (Voter’s ID) or Local Employment ID.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Who Should Come? Perfect for adventure families, history buffs, and underground exploration enthusiasts. Great for kids fascinated by caves and adults loving historical mysteries.

🔍 What's There:

  • Guided tours available (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM)
  • Parking on-site for tour groups
  • Restroom facilities at entrance
  • Gift shop with local crafts
  • Professional guides share historical stories
  • Well-lit pathways through main chambers
  • Subterranean lake viewing (Grotto Lake)

💡 Insider Tip: Bring a light jacket – it's naturally cool inside year-round! The cave has been called everything from "Rum Caves" to "Runaway Bay Caves" throughout history, but locals know the best photo spot is at the underground lake where the limestone formations create natural frames. Early morning tours (9-10 AM) are less crowded and guides have more time for detailed stories about the Taino pottery fragments still discovered here.
